For this brief demo, we have created a very small stack of completely free-form unstructured notes that contain summary information about United States' presidents. We named the stack "US Presidents". Of course, your own stacks would normally contain hundreds or even thousands of notes, but the search principles are the same. Your own notes can be input in any form and created by typing or copy/paste of any content you wish. The demo information here was gathered using the NoteFrog automatic clipboard capture feature from a website containing presidential biographies. We are going to use the NoteFrog Super String Search at the top-left of the screen to find the entry for Barack Obama.

This demo will show what happens as you begin typing "Barack Obama" into the search string field. When typing, no "enter" or mouse click is necessary- you simply type your search string. The note counter now shows 44 and that will count down as we type and notes which do not contain our search string are eliminated.

As you type your search string, NoteFrog searches as you type to find matches that exist ANYWHERE in ANY NOTE. The display of matching notes is updated instantly as you type. In actual use, the following screens would appear only as a blur as you type.

b
The instant that you type the "b" into the Search Field at the top-left you will see that all 44 notes contain a "b". The NoteFrog Super String Search searches as you type, locating all occurrences anywhere in all of the notes in the stack. As we might have suspected, typing a "b" into our search string did not eliminate any of the biographies, since all of them contained a "b" somewhere, as is shown in the highlighted "Born:" in George Washington's entry. Thus, the match count of notes that contain a match for our string "b" remains at 44.
ba
Adding "a" to the Search String instantly shows us that only the 16 notes still listed on the left contain the string "ba". The entry for George Washington remains in focus with the match now moving to the "Ball" in his mother Mary Ball Washington's maiden name. Notice that the Barack Obama entry has now moved into view and could be clicked upon at this point, but we will continue the demo.
bar
Adding "r" to the Search String, shows the 5 biographies that contain matches for our 'bar" search string, the first showing in the Andrew Jackson entry as highlighted in his wife's maiden name: "Rachel Donelson Robards".

Any links in your notes- such as shown on the second line here- are clickable and will open that page in your browser.

bara
Adding "a" to the Search String and we see only 3 entries that contain a match for that string. The two presidents Bush remain since both contain the name Barbara Bush: as wife for George Herbert Walker Bush and in the "Mother" entry for George Walker Bush.

This page also includes a demonstration of how NoteFrog allows you to toggle to a full view of any note in the list. Click on any of the three Presidents to see.

barac
Add "c" to the Search String. Only 1 match. All other biographies have now been eliminated with only the Barack Obama entry containing the matching string.

In actual use, you would simply type the string "barack" in at full typing speed and would not even see the intermediate result screens as anything but momentary flashes. By the time you finished typing, the final page would be displayed.

Simple, Flexible, Powerful
  • Your own notes are completely free-form and unstructured.
  • The first line of every note becomes the "Title" that will be listed in the list on the left, but the search searches the entire content of every note as you type.
  • There are many variations on the basic search shown including powerful compound (AND) searches.
  • Many additional techniques allow such things as easy assignment of individual notes to any number of tree structures- and all done using simple free-format techniques.
